May 1980 was the 150th anniversary of the original Rainhill Trials which determined that steam locomotives would be the form of propulsion used on this railway, and was won by the "Rocket". In May 1980 British Rail re-enacted these trials using the same stretch of the Liverpool to Manchester Railway. Here, "Flying Scotsman" is about to pass, with others following on.
