Bowker Vale railway station was opened in 1938 by the London Midland and Scottish Railway, to serve what was then a growing residential area. The line and station ceased to serve trains in August 1991 and reopened in April 1992 as part of the first phase (Bury to Altrincham) of the Metrolink tramway.
