Directly situated in front of Grey Harlings Hotel, this photo shows the 18th hole of the 1562 Golf Course in Montrose. The 1562 Course has been described as a “magnificent stretch of marvellously natural ground”. With its physical features like springy, undulating fairways, deep bunkers and fast greens combining with atmospheric conditions like blustery, east winds and haar, the 1562 Course presents a challenge to all golfers. With other Scottish, east coast towns like St Andrews and Carnoustie, Montrose is situated on the most famous coastline in the world for links golf. Golf has been played at Montrose for over 450 years thus making it the 5th oldest venue in the world. In the mid-19th century, Montrose Links had more holes in play than anywhere else in the world and it celebrated that uniqueness, in 1816, with the only 25-hole professional golf tournament ever held.
