Basingwerk Abbey

Basingwerk Abbey was founded in 1132 by Ranulf de Gernon, 4th Earl of Chester, and in 1147 became part of the Cistercian order. The abbey closed in 1536, and today is an impressive ruin. Little remains of the main body of the abbey which is the subject of this picture. The wall on the left is part of the south transept.
