Workers reinstate the road surface on the westbound carriageway to the west of Walton Street. This followed the replacement by Northern Gas Networks of an ageing metal gas main with new plastic pipes. This necessitated the temporary closure of this part of the route into the city centre from 10 May 2021, and scheduled to continue until 28 May. Daily traffic gridlock around this time was attributed in part to that closure.
