The units at the east end of the Oak Mall are mostly empty. The owners have applied for permission to demolish this end of the mall and to build apartment buildings here. The four horizontal black bars are where the A78 High Street crosses the mall and demolition is planned as far as that point. This was originally Hamilton Street until the early 1970s when the buildings were demolished to make way for an uncovered shopping precinct known as Hamilton Way and Hamilton Gate. The bland concrete precinct was roofed and modernised in the early 1990s and was to be named 'Clyde Square', but the name was changed at the last minute to 'Oak Mall', possibly to avoid confusion with the Clyde shopping centre at Clydebank.
