At Kingsmead Lodge the road crosses the line of the old Malmesbury branch line - now gone. That railway opened in 1877 and was a six mile stretch from Malmesbury to Dauntsey Lock. However, the G.W.R. (who helped with the original branch) opened the larger main line in the early 1900s and created a link to that in the 1930s, negating the old one. The Malmesbury line closed in 1962 and the tracks ripped up.
