The tablet above the arch is almost completely eroded but according to Epitaphs and Inscriptions from Burial Grounds in the North East of Scotland, vol. 2, p. 405 by Jervise, it once stated: L.A.P / Haec Corpus Sydera (sic) Mentem / 1666 (L.A.P. = Lord Alexander Pitsligo, 'the body of stars within'). The whole site is a scheduled monument (SM6146: http://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/SM6146 ).
