The sign tells of a tale which happened many years ago when Germanus, Duke of Burgundy used to hunt in the area and hung his kills on a tree. The local bishop didn’t like the thought of dead creatures being hung up trophies on the tree so ordered it to be chopped down, which didn’t go down very well. However not long after the bishop dreamed he was soon to die and Germanus was to be his successor. The Duke was duly ordained and was soon enjoying the job; so much so that he was eventually made a bishop, hence the mitre in the spandrel below, and the dedication of the parish church. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6815238
