Swaffham town’s sign is double sided but both sides are identical. To cut a long story short, it depicts John Chapman, the Swaffham Tinker. The story goes that he dreamt if he went to London he would get rich. So he went to London and found the streets weren’t paved with gold after all but by chance spoke to a man who told him “I had a dream, I dreamt that at a place called Swaffham, in Norfolk, dwells John Chapman, a pedlar, who hath a tree at the back of his house, under which is buried a pot of money.” The tinker hurried home, found the pot of money, and lived the rest of his life a wealthy man.
