Benenden has one of the largest village greens in Kent. It has been a focal point of village life for centuries. The former primary school dates from 1861. John Newman in The Buildings of England: West Kent and The Weald says of the building: "This little building is every bit as sophisticated as Norman Shaw was to be, and Shaw first built in this style six years later."
