The area around the quarry was granted in an act of 1799 to extract stone in order to build and maintain the roads in Winscombe and Sandford. Although the quarry is no longer producing materials, the legislation is still of note. There are several unusual species here, including Spindle and Wayfaring trees, and a bit of Mistletoe too. Following the recolonisation of the spoil heaps by nature the site is a Regionally Important Geological Site (RIGS) in what is an AONB.
