The sham timber framing to the 19th century brick frontage hides a much older (probably 17th century) genuine timber framed house, altered on the ground floor to retail premises. It was Grade II listed https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101054377-6a-st-mary-street-newport#.YGgq-uhKjIU & https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1054377 in 1978.
