The figure depicted on the sign is Pocahontas, or to use her real name ‘Matoaka’, which means 'Little Mischief'. Her husband, John Rolfe had been baptised in Heacham church and years later when they travelled to England with their infant son Thomas, the pair spent two years staying at Heacham Hall. Rolfe eventually returned to America but that’s another story all together. The portrait is supported by a horse and a “seahorse” one of Neptune’s creatures. Below the portrait is symbolic of the beach, with shells, a starfish and samphire.
