The sign is carved and unpainted. It depicts a Roman soldier representing Branodunum, the Roman fort which is one of the eleven Roman forts along the South and East coast. Below the name, the spandrels are carved with a lifeboat on the left, and cartwheels on the right. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6793645
