The Cumbria Way near Newbiggin

The public footpath from Newbiggin to Hollowmire crosses the top of the field towards the gateway in a dry stone wall. It is the route of The Cumbria Way, a 74 mile long distance footpath from Ulverston to Carlisle (next photograph Image). This footpath previously left the Beck Side to Knottallow road at Windy Ash and continued through Newbiggin Farm to re-join the present route near Stony Crag, but was diverted because a local landowner wanted privacy where the original route passed a dwelling. The revised route offers better views in clear weather and less road walking for those on The Cumbria Way, but the surroundings are less varied and interesting for walkers than the old route, which has been closed.
