Occupying a dominant position in the town centre, at the junction of the two main shopping streets, the former Devonshire Hotel was converted to apartments in the 1980s. It was a favourite place of local associations for hosting AGMs and Annual Dinners. 'Devonshire' comes from the fact that most of the land along this part of the south coast was part of the estate of the Dukes of Devonshire.
