A southbound express freight headed by Black 5 44993 hustles past a pair of 8Fs waiting for banking duties. There is a stiff gradient on the West Coast Main Line just north of Wigan station and this was the most convenient point to stop freight trains to allow banking engines to be added to the rear. It would be important to keep freight trains moving at a reasonable speed over this section to minimise conflict with the extensive express passenger service on the route.
