When the first edition of the Ordnance Survey Six-Inch map of the area was published in 1864 this 'road' led directly to Benton North Farm, one of a number of farms to the north of Front Street, Benton. A large area of that land to the north was bequeathed to the Balliol College, Oxford in the mid 14th century by Phillip Somerville, and it remained part of the college's estates until it was sold off for development during the 20th century.
