Shipmeadow has nothing to do with ships except to say that at one time they were occasionally seen on the River Waveney near Ellingham. The sheep give a clue that the parish was spelled Shepemeadow on John Speed's 1610 map, and sheep meadow was the most likely explanation, even though it was recorded in Domesday as Scipmedu.
