Passing Sienna Gardens on Sciennes Road

Sienna Gardens is a residential area built on the site of Bertram's St Katherine's engineering works. Bertrams made machinery for paper mills and further back, steam engines. The factory closed in 1985. Now Southside seems such a strange place for heavy industry and it is easy to forget what a varied mosaic Edinburgh once was. Sciennes and Sienna refer to a convent dedicated to St Catherine of Sienna which presumably predated the industry.
