There was a gatepost at or near this location which had an Ordnance Survey benchmark cut during the Penrith to Workington survey of 1855/6. The levelled height of the mark was 934.22 feet above Liverpool Datum. The surveyor's description was 'Mark on West pier of gate, at North side of road'.
