The church tower, being the oldest structure in the parish, and the cedar tree under which William Kirby, considered to be the founder of entomology, used to study butterflies are the main subjects. A butterfly in the top right refers to his book, ‘An Introduction to Entomology’. The ploughman with his horse refers to the agricultural heritage of the parish and even the colouring of the name reflects the dedication of the church to St Mary, who is recognised by always being dressed in Marian Blue.
