Ordnance Survey records indicate that in 1855 a benchmark was levelled at 571.569 feet above Liverpool Datum on a barn at this location as part of the Penrith to Workington survey line. The surveyor's description was 'Mark on North-west angle of barn, at W. end of Stainton Village'. See www.bench.marks.org.uk/bm67413
