This three bird charm or chirm of goldfinches (Carduelis carduelis) was photographed from the Scottish Wildlife Visitor Centre on the southern side of Montrose Basin. Goldfinches have many old country names including goldie, gold linnet, redcap and thistle finch. Thistles are a favourite food of goldfinches. The scientific name for goldfinch is Carduelis carduelis and this is derived from the Latin name Cardus which means thistle.
