The derivation of the name has been lost over the centuries but the latest accepted thinking is that it means the camp by the ash tree and whose to argue with that. That is what the sign depicts, a stockade camp and an ash tree. The village names is occasionally spelt without the final 'e'. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4291532
