Former Whisky Distillery Stillhouse on Pikes Pool Drive

Not a house for an introvert. This was once part of a whisky distillery, and being a listed building, is the only substantial structure still standing from the old site. The distillery was founded in 1795. The date of the stillhouse is unknown but it must have gone up after 1830, as according to various online sources it is a rare surviving example of a stillhouse designed to accommodate the Coffey Still, a groundbreaking design of 1830, on which modern stills are still based. Invented by an Irishman, it was quickly adopted everywhere except Ireland, which in the 19th Century was the world's biggest producer of whisky (or whiskey - Irish spelling!) A new residential street, part of the same development, running behind the houses to the left of the picture, is called Stillhouse Loan.
