In the past a number of breweries used to put a logo outside their public houses and inns, often using ceramic tiles. The logo outside this public house indicates it was at one time owned by Halls Oxford & West Brewery Company Limited. The brewery was founded in 1795 but it was taken over, along with its 300 pubs, in 1926 by Samuel Allsopp Limited of Burton upon Trent. The brewery at Oxford was closed the same year. Samuel Allsopp's successors eventually became part of Allied Breweries. A diminishing number of Halls plaques survive. They are especially prone to disappear when the pub has closed.
