'Thorp' is a Middle English word for a hamlet or small village. Some sources suggest that 'Barkby' is a "Farmstead or village of a man called Bǫrkr or Barki". But https://www.charnwood.gov.uk/files/documents/barkby_and_barkby_thorpe_conservation_area_illustrated_appraisal/barkby%20illustrated%20appraisal.pdf notes that Barkby is recorded in the Domesday Survey as Barcheberie, taken to mean "the village by Birch trees".
