The train in the centre is standing on the original Garston and Warrington Railway (later LNWR) route, with shunting yards on either side. Ivatt Class 2 2-6-0 waits for departure with a classic mixed freight. To the left Stanier Black 5 44837 climbs the ramp of the Deviation line, opened by the LNWR in 1869 to avoid the complex junctions on the old line, and providing a new station slightly closer to the town centre.
