The Liverpool-Manchester Railway, the world's oldest inter-city railway, was built in the 1820’s, this tunnel beneath the railway line once linked Whiston Pottery with the collieries beyond. Whiston township was known for its pottery which dates from 1798, producing everything from clay pipes and coffee pots to chamber pots. It ceased production in the early 1900's when the name of the adjacent row of cottages, Victoria Row was changed to Dales Row, John Dale being the pottery owner's name. It is now the north western entrance to Stadt Moers Park.
