The school changed from Hamilton Academy to Hamilton Grammar in 1972 as a result of the coming of comprehensive schools in Lanarkshire. The history of Hamilton Academy goes back to 1588 when it was endowed by the 1st Marquess of Hamilton. The school re-located to this new building in 1913.
