This horizontal single cylinder steam engine - named Eunice - was built by J Petrie & Co of Rochdale in the 1890s and used at the Rochdale Steam Laundry. The slide valve cylinder is 12" x 24" and the flywheel is 5' 6" diameter. It developed 40 horsepower at 100 rpm. Other features included four bar crosshead guides, single web crank, box big end and a Pickering governor. The laundry closed in 1970. As far as I know the engine remains on display and can be turned over by an electric motor. In the background is a Willans two crank engine that I believe was on loan from the Science Museum.
