The Victorian original, one of the country's earliest, is somewhat overwhelmed by the modern tent-like structures added in the 1990s. Birkenhead Park, which opened in 1847, was the first publicly-funded park in the country. Instigated by the Birkenhead Improvement Commissioners, the overall plan was conceived by Joseph Paxton, his pupil Edward Kemp supervised work, and John Robertson and Lewis Hornblower designed most of the buildings.
