Thousands, even in this short section of Nant Kenfig. But why? Before industry came to Aberkenfig this was no doubt just a small stream. But with the development of coal, iron, quarrying - and brick manufacture - changes occurred. One possible explanation is that with the development of the nearby Parc Slip Colliery (- see Image] et al in Image, Image and Image) there was a need to discharge mine water without flooding the village of Aberkenfig. A brick reinforced culvert, using locally manufactured bricks, appears to have been the solution.
