Built as a private residence in 1850 the house and grounds were purchased by Sheffield Corporation in 1894 and used as a public recreation ground. The house has been variously a boarding school, a museum and a base for the Home Guard in WWII. It currently serves as the clubhouse for the adjacent municipal golf course.
