It seems odd that at this point the River Skell is flowing south west when its natural course should be to the east. Carry on downstream and the river doubles back on itself to flow north eastwards. This is all part of the rather odd drainage patterns of rivers and streams to the west of Ripon where natural courses have been altered by the work of glaciers and meltwater channels.
