The road that used to come straight up the hill with a gradient of up to 11% as shown here became 'old', in the sense of superseded, a long time ago, as even the earliest OS map of 1851 shows the present alignment of Harrogate Road. It is now signed as 'closed to motor vehicles except for access'.
