The road that used to come straight up the hill with a gradient of up to 11% became 'old', in the sense of superseded, a long time ago, as even the earliest OS map of 1851 shows the present alignment of Harrogate Road with this junction labelled as 'New Road Top'. IT is now signed as 'closed to motor vehicles except for access'.
