The park was laid out barely in time for the celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. It's likely that each wrought iron bar of the railings terminated in a long deadly spike. For some reason, perhaps health and safety-related, the spikes have been sawn off and alternate bars capped with a modern drop-forged twiddle. The ground is dusted with fallen flowers of Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima).
