A view looking north-north-west taken from a bridge on the road between Charwelton and Priors Marston. Down below the vanished track of the Great Central Railway, now the preserve of wildlife rather than trains. Ahead can be seen the southern portal, with the datestone 1897, and an airshaft of the 2997-yard Catesby Tunnel. This tunnel was built at the insistence of the landowner who did not want the sight of trains crossing his domain. The occupants of Catesby House could hear and feel the trains rushing by below them. According to a report in Rail magazine (from an item in Railway Ramblers magazine no. 168) this tunnel may next year (2021) be opened to cyclists on Sundays. Walkers too perhaps at some point or would that be too much of a safety and insurance risk?. Time photo taken not available. Image] Image
