I didn't cross the burn to investigate further, but certainly looks man-made, and smaller than it was originally. There was an unspecified building nearby at Hermand Home Farm on OS maps from the earliest map to the 1950s, which may or may not be relevant. My best guess is it is there so clothes could be washed in the water without the washer having to get wet!
