The clock on the tower is a public cause: villagers raised about £200 to install a timepiece celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Smiths of Clerkenwell built it, and it carried on showing the time on its seven foot copper dish until 1963. The workings needed some attention and the villagers raised another £200 for that. However, in 1996 the weighted winding mechanisms were replaced for an automatic system. Yes, the villagers stumped up the cash once again and the work was carried out by Smiths of Derby.
