This pleasantly wooded green area is now someone's back garden, but in the 19thC it was one of several working quarries around Cropton and the first edition OS map of 1854 shows 4 limekilns here. The same map shows in excess of 20 kilns around the parish, all of which have either disappeared or are now covered by thick undergrowth.
