Floating Island, Killingworth Lake

In 2019, as part of a scheme to reduce the risk of flooding in the Killingworth catchment area, three floating islands were constructed in the centre of the lake. These islands give plants and animals a place to live, both above and below the water, and they also help to improve the quality of the lake naturally with the plant roots sucking up nutrients and cleansing the water.
