The former Edinburgh to Carlisle line was reinstated in 2015 as the Borders Railway from Edinburgh to Tweedbank near Melrose. A detailed study is in progress about the feasibility of extending the line once more to Hawick and Carlisle. At present, about 2km of the trackbed down to Hassendean form part of a Hawick Paths walk over the Minto Hills, returning to Denholm.
