Surmounting the sign is a likeness of a Victoria Cross awarded to Claud Thomas Bourchier in 1857 by Queen Victoria and he has a memorial window at St Margaret's church. He is buried five miles away in Buxton. The two ladies in a pony and trap with the church in the background are said to be Anna Sewell, author of “Black Beauty”, with her mother who had connections with the village. Below the sign on the post is a picture of a hairy mammoth, he is there because some relatives of his lost some teeth, which were found in the early 1950s at Sparham Common gravel pit. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6689325
