Bournemouth owes its character to Captain Lewis Tregonwell (1758–1832). He served in the Dorset Yeomanry in the years leading up to the Napoleonic Wars, leading patrols along the shorelines, and noted that this part of the coastline was rugged but attractive. The Bourne valley later became the place where Tregonwell started to build a substantial house and is regarded as the catalyst that formed the town.
