Looking across the main holiday hotel area of Bournemouth from the heights of Priory Road reveals a contrast. Beyond is the fast-evolving skyline of offices and university blocks; nearer is the rather incongruous fortificated appearance of the Royal Exeter Hotel, complete with Union Jacks. The hotel was founded in 1812 as a home for Captain Lewis Tregonwell, who was charged with defending the coastline against Napoleonic forces. It may be no coincindence that the building also has some battlements, which he later let out to the fashionable bathers of the time.
