Although the building serves the villages of Penny Bridge and Greenodd, its official name is Egton-cum-Newland, St Mary the Virgin. The west end of the building (1969 by Frearson) is quite distinctive with an attached bell tower and windows unlike traditional ecclesiastical styles. The remainder dates originally from 1791, with alterations in 1831, 1855, 1865 and 1893 described more fully in the Church Heritage Record.
